Clash Issue 125 Amaarae

Amaarae is the fourth face of Clash 125.

Amaarae’s breakout second album ‘Fountain Baby’ is one of this summer’s essential listens, a project that seems to encompass a myriad of genres, while never allowing itself to be tied down. Perhaps that’s a tribute to its maker – an artist with roots either side of the Atlantic, this Ghanian-American sound-shifter lets her life come to the surface, that rugged honesty haloing every minute detail of her art.

Now it’s time to meet the real Amaarae. Ama Serwah Genfi wants to build a bold, judgement-free zone, one powered by her vision of pop maximalism. With ‘Fountain Baby’ she’s moving boldly outwards, dissecting her feelings in the glare of the public eye while also constructing something universal.

A dose of pop maximalism, we were granted an intimate audience with its creator. In this cover interview we discuss her roots, and why her aims remain tethered to the skies above us. An artist steeped in astrology, Amaarae is a true Cancerian – caring, empathetic, and unashamed in her ambitions.
